Position Yourself to the Advantage

January 27th, 2008 |

I can relate. It’s not as if I can’t. But, it’s right in front of our faces and we can’t see the forest through the trees. Why do we ignore the big signs, the smack-you-in-the-face information that points to the times when we should already be prepared?

Headlines on ABC News the Other Day:

DOW DOWN 440 POINTS, ONE OF THE WORST OPENS ON RECORD FOR U.S. MARKETS

THE FEDERAL RESERVE CUTS KEY INTEREST RATE BY THREE-QUARTERS OF A PERCENTAGE POINT IN AN EMERGENCY BID TO SUPPORT THE WEAK U.S. ECONOMY

“The Weak U.S. Economy”

We’re watching gas prices rise. Food prices are on the rise. The dollar (USD) keeps going down in comparison to currency of other countries. Have you ever stopped to think what is happening to the U.S.? Have you ever stopped to think that maybe the world already knew?

Let me digress from such a worldly perspective to a more local concept just for now. When you were a child, you ran out the door without your coat even though your mother told you to wear one. The weather man on the radio told you to take your umbrella. But, you looked out the window and you saw sunlight. Everyone had to be wrong.

How wet did you get that day?

I remember when I was teaching, I lived about thirty miles from the high school where I taught. And to add to the imagery, it was like a whole different world from where I lived at the time. I woke up to a beautiful sunny morning and got ready for school. Half way up the mountain, I started to see the snow flakes. Another few miles and snow was lying on the ground. I turned the radio on finally to hear that school was called for the day.

I don’t know which is worse, not listening or not having the information in the first place. I guess it’s like what Mark Twain has to say, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.” Either way you’re not utilizing the information available to you.

Question:

What would happen if a comet was spotted and projected to crash to the earth somewhere in Florida during Spring Break?

I imagine thousands of college students being incinerated while dancing and doing beer bongs. At least, they went with a smile on their face right?

Well, that’s pretty much how I look at our world. Either we’re not listening or the radio is turned off because the signs are as huge as they can be. I don’t think the message could be clearer if it were blinking on huge neon signs.

Bruce Lee, the master of martial arts, had some of the greatest philosophies known to man. One that has literally changed my way of thinking is his philosophy of water.

“You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can crash, drip, flow…be water my friend.”

No, what exactly am I trying to say? It has economic and social implications.

If the U.S. economy is weak, that doesn’t mean you have to suffer. Be water my friend.

If the U.S. economy is weak, others are strong. You can invest in their futures and position yourself in the advantage. ABC News Headlines Just a Little Over a Day Ago:

WALL STREET REBOUNDS AFTER FIVE-DAY LOSING STREAK, CLOSING UP 299 POINTS AFTER DROPPING MORE THAN 320 POINTS EARLIER IN THE DAY

There were business people in China and England who made millions from the difference of a few days. Think about that! Of course, not many people are in position to make millions. But, take it respectively. If had invested a few hundred dollars when points were down, in merely a two day turn around you would have been looking at a possible profit of over $10,000. Not bad for a few days of letting your money do the work for you.

You can invest in stock. You can buy real estate. You can buy foreign currency. For every winner there’s a loser. For every upturn, there’s a downturn. For every adverse situation, there’s an opportunity. Position yourself accordingly.

Rather than look back on things and say, “Wow, it actually happened. I knew that was going to happen.” Look forward and say, “This is going to happen.” Get ready for it and do something about it. Don’t sit like a lame duck, blind to the facts. Position yourself to be in the advantage.
